A brand new start for this coming year of the Earth Ox..
Malaysia's First Oceanarium Under Fire
A Sabah state goverment-approved plan to build Malaysia's first oceanarium resort comprimising more than 200 luxury chalets on the beautiful island of Mabul has caused a stir among environmentalists, villagers and dive operators. The crystal-clear waters of Mabul is home to stuning marine biodiversity and there are concerns that the large-scale project will harm marine life and fragile reefs of Pulau Sipadan, nine nautical miles away. Datuk Masidi Manjun, Minister of Tourism, Culture & Environment in Sabah, told New Sabah Times, "What the oceanarium is trying to create is a diving spot by rehabilitating the coral and marine life so that people need go to Sipadan but just stay in Mabul." However, the Sabah Environment Protection Association has questioned the necessity of such a project in an already popular diving hotspot as well as the approval granted without the execution of an Environmental Impact Assesment, as reported in The Star.
